The comparison of these two photos is a good illustration of the importance that strong light and shadow has on an image. The photo on the left was snapped before sunrise. I liked the location, so I waited patiently—about 30 minutes or so—for the sun to bathe the hillside and bring out the warmth and intense colors of the scene. These were taken in The Watauga Reserve in the Southern Appalachians last fall. ©Van Miller
